Not that long ago, in the musical micro-cosmos of Melbourne, Mike Buhl (TV) slinked into venues as a new dj with an original take on the sounds de jour. At the time, Chicago and West Coast house filled the airwaves of local boutique clubs and bars. Progressive house was tapering off and Electro began its unrelenting grasp on the club scene. Wired with an ear for sound evolution, Mike drew together the elements that moved him from the local melting pot of styles while keeping his finger on the pulse of overseas. Out of this he fused his own tech house blend and forged ahead as a dj playing sophisticated beats, providing audiences with a preview of what’s now and what’s next.
Without feeling confined to regurgitate audio trends of the local scene, Mike powered ahead creating his own sound sphere. Specifically Mike understands and embraces the concept of light and shade, and the journey of the dj’s set as experienced by the audience. Never content to simply bash out track after track of the week, the adventure within a Mike Buhl set twists and turns, churns and chills, and entices you through a carefully constructed musical odyssey.
This drive to be more than a dj mixing tracks, saw Mike integrate technology into his setup in order to achieve the exceptional music held in his vision. Tools such as Traktor Scratch and Ableton Live play a vital role in strengthening his performances as well as creating the anticipation and build which he is known for. The heady combination of Mike’s intuitive approach to composition along with clever use of equipment – ensures every element has been adjusted to suit Mike’s style.
Currently, Mike’s music resides somewhere between minimal techno and tech house, which is the perfect realm for his balance between swingin and sinister. While inspired by a medley of electronic artists over the past few decades, the more contemporary artists Mike admires are the likes of Stephan Goldman, Paul Ritch, Richie Hawtin, and the current main players in minimal production.
The past year has seen Mike playing around in the studio collaborating with a couple of other producers under the moniker “3amp”. While this combination of talents promises some exciting music to emerge over the year to come, time in the studio has also encouraged Mike to work on his own solo projects which has seen a number of tracks created in a short period of time.
2007 has seen Mike make his mark both nationally and abroad following two exciting invitations. Australia’s premier dance music network Kiss FM offered him his own weekly show in which to showcase his waves while word spread to the Northern Hemisphere, where Mike was invited to play a guest spot at Italian club Hakuna Matata alongside Paolo Martini and Remo. The response to Mike’s European debut was overwhelming and management quickly secured him for a return visit.
Closer to home, Melbourne club institution Room680 has also tapped into Mikes talent securing him to run a monthly event ‘Snapshot’. Aptly titled for Mikes ability to select the most exciting developments in music on an International level, Snapshot will also be packaged with a signature podcast.
The synthesis of the weekly radio show, a fortnightly snapshot podcast and monthly club event provides Mike with an opportunity to elevate his sound in Australia while continuing his rise overseas. With this jam packed schedule, Mike promises to be one of the most innovative and multi talented artists of today, but more importantly – tomorrow. The future is certain – The future is the sound of Mike Buhl.
